Things to talk about while coloring
Butterflies start out as caterpillars, then make a chrysalis, and come out with wings. They taste with their feet and drink nectar from flowers using a long, curly tongue. Look for butterflies in a garden or park and talk about the colors you see. Some butterflies travel long distances, like monarchs, which fly south for the winter.
Coloring ideas
Butterfly wings match on both sides, so color the top two wings alike and the bottom two wings alike. The circles inside each wing are perfect for a bright contrasting color. Use a dark color for the body and antennae so the wings stand out. Dot markers fit neatly inside the four circles for the youngest colorists.
A little learning
Making the left and right wings match is an easy introduction to symmetry and matching. Count the four wings, the four circles, and the two antennae.
