Things to talk about while coloring
Polar bears live in the icy Arctic, and their thick fur and a layer of fat keep them warm. Under their white-looking fur, their skin is black, which surprises most kids. A mother polar bear usually stays close to her cubs for about two years while they learn to hunt and swim.
Coloring ideas
White crayon doesn't show up much, so try a very light cream, pale gray, or soft blue shading on the fur. Color the noses and eyes black, and use pale blues and grays for the ice hill and snow. Older kids can draw a few snowflakes falling around the bears and color the sky behind them a soft blue.
A little learning
Talk about big and little by comparing the mother bear and her cub, then find other big and little pairs around the room.
