A fluffy baby chick stands beside its cracked eggshell. Talk about how chicks hatch after about three weeks of being kept warm. Yellow is the obvious pick, but brown and black chicks are real too.

Things to talk about while coloring

Chicken eggs usually hatch after about three weeks of being kept warm by a mother hen or an incubator. A new chick is covered in soft, fluffy feathers called down. Point to the cracked eggshell beside this chick and talk about how it pecked its way out. Then name other baby animals born in spring.

Coloring ideas

Yellow is the classic chick color, with orange for the beak and feet. The broken eggshell can be white or light tan, and the tulip and daisies give a chance to use pinks, purples, and greens.

A little learning

Chick starts with the CH sound, which is two letters making one sound, so practice it together with words like cheese, chair, and chin. Counting the flowers around the chick is a quick bonus job.
