Smiling stegosaurus with back plates and spiked tail, dinosaur coloring page

Stegosaurus Coloring Page

A smiling stegosaurus shows off its big back plates and spiky tail. Ask your child to count the plates, then color them in an alternating pattern. Its brain was roughly the size of a lime, which always gets a laugh.

Things to talk about while coloring

Stegosaurus had large plates standing up along its back and sharp spikes at the end of its tail. Its head was tiny compared with its big body, and it ate plants. It lived so long ago that T. rex actually lived closer in time to people than to Stegosaurus, which makes for a fun dinner fact.

Coloring ideas

Alternate two colors along the back plates, like orange and yellow, for an easy pattern. Make the tail spikes a darker shade, and use the small grass tufts for careful coloring practice. Older kids can draw thin lines inside each plate, like veins in a leaf, and color between them.

A little learning

Counting the back plates from head to tail is simple counting practice, and you can point out which plates are big and which are small along the way.
