Things to talk about while coloring
Gelt is a Yiddish word for money, and on Hanukkah many children receive chocolate coins wrapped in gold or silver foil. The coins are often used as playing pieces in the dreidel game. Talk about how real coins look and feel different from one another. Some families also give small amounts of real money as Hanukkah gelt.
Coloring ideas
Alternate gold and silver on the coins so the pile shines, using yellow and gray if you don't have metallic crayons. The mesh bag can be blue, red, or white, and older kids can color every other diamond in the net. Older kids can draw a design on the face of each coin, like a star or a menorah.
A little learning
Counting the coins spilled on the table and sorting them into gold and silver groups mixes counting with sorting.
