Things to talk about while coloring

A Hanukkah menorah, also called a hanukkiah, holds nine candles. Eight stand for the eight nights of Hanukkah, and the raised helper candle in the middle is called the shamash, which is used to light the others. One more candle is lit each night until all eight are glowing on the last night. Families often place the lit menorah in a window so people passing by can see the lights.

Coloring ideas

Gold, silver, or bright blue look lovely for the menorah base and branches. Color each flame yellow with an orange center, and older kids can give the candles a repeating pattern of blue and white.

A little learning

Counting the candles to nine, then pointing out that the shamash sits higher than the rest, is simple counting plus position words like middle and higher.
