Things to talk about while coloring
Jelly doughnuts are called sufganiyot in Hebrew, and they are a favorite Hanukkah treat. Foods fried in oil are eaten during Hanukkah to remember the story of a small amount of oil that lasted eight nights. Ask your child what jelly flavor they would choose for the middle. Doughnuts puff up because yeast in the dough makes tiny bubbles of gas.
Coloring ideas
Golden brown works for the doughnuts, with the little sugar dots left white or colored lightly. Make the jelly peeking out red or purple, and decorate the plate with a blue rim or pattern. Older kids can add a striped napkin under the plate or draw a fourth doughnut.
A little learning
Counting three doughnuts, then talking about how to share them fairly among family members, is early math in a real-life setting.
