Things to talk about while coloring
Latkes are crispy potato pancakes fried in oil, a classic food on Hanukkah. Families often eat them with applesauce, sour cream, or both. Ask your child which topping they would pick and whether they'd like to help grate potatoes next time you cook. Potatoes grow underground, and the part we eat is called a tuber.
Coloring ideas
Golden yellow and light brown make the latkes look crispy, with a darker brown along the lacy edges. Color the applesauce pale yellow or light tan, and give the bowl and spoon their own bright colors. Older kids can draw a little pattern on the plate's rim, like stripes or a ring of small stars.
A little learning
Counting the latkes in the stack from bottom to top introduces words like first, second, and third. Count the spoon and the bowl too, so your child can say how many things are on the plate altogether.
