Things to talk about while coloring
This little jar of oil connects to the Hanukkah story: when the Temple in Jerusalem was rededicated, a tiny amount of oil burned for eight nights. That's one reason Hanukkah is known as the Festival of Lights. Talk about other ways people use light to celebrate during the dark winter months. Olive oil comes from pressing olives, which grow on trees.
Coloring ideas
A warm clay color like orange-brown or terra cotta works for the jar, with a different color on the stripe around its middle. Make the flame yellow and orange, and color the light rays bright yellow so the whole page glows.
A little learning
Talking about what happened first, next, and at the end of the oil story is a simple way to practice retelling in order. Counting eight nights on your fingers adds a bit of math to the retelling.
