Things to talk about while coloring
The Mayflower was a sailing ship that carried the Pilgrims across the Atlantic Ocean to North America in 1620. The trip took about two months, with more than a hundred passengers crowded on board. Sailing ships move when wind fills their sails, so talk about what might happen on a calm day with no wind at all.
Coloring ideas
Color the ocean in layers of light and dark blue, then use wood browns for the hull and masts. Older kids can add stripes to the sails or design small flags for the tops of the masts, and the seagulls can stay white with gray wing tips. A pale sky blue behind the gulls makes the white sails pop.
A little learning
Counting the three sails and the windows along the hull, then comparing the tall middle sail with the shorter ones, builds counting and size words.
