Things to talk about while coloring
Male turkeys, called toms, are the ones that puff up and fan their tail feathers like this to show off. Wild turkeys can fly short distances and often sleep up in trees at night, which surprises a lot of kids. Ask your child what sound a turkey makes, then see who in the family can do the best gobble.
Coloring ideas
Give each tail feather its own fall shade, or alternate red, orange, and brown all the way around the fan for an easy pattern. Older kids can add stripes or dots inside every feather, then color the fallen leaves at the turkey's feet in matching colors. The red wattle under the beak is a fun little detail to point out and color last.
A little learning
Counting the tail feathers out loud before coloring, then again after, is simple one-to-one counting practice that feels like part of the fun.
